What's the name all about?

So to start, here is the story behind the name of the blog. My fifteen year old son and I randomly use the phrase "Jeez, get outta your quadrilateral parallelogram" in other words, "Get outta your box". Yes, I know, we are nerds!

I am a happily married (17 years) mother of two boys (ages 10&15) and a Director of Children and Family Ministries at Quail Lakes Baptist Church in Stockton, Ca. I have been in ministry for seventeen years, and I love it. The idea of getting out of said box (or quadrilateral parallelogram) is something I battle daily as a creature of habit. I enjoy new and exciting things, yet love the familiarity of the known and comfy. As a ministry leader for children, we know how fast their world is changing. We need to keep up! And more than ever we need to educate parents how to keep up. So, this blog is born. I plan on posting things that I have learned and find insightful in both ministry and parenting. I hope this is found useful.
First tip! Do you have teachers, leaders, or a spouse, that are creatures of habit? (yes, I said spouse) When you sit down to plan the next "annual" something, keep tradition and make it clear you are doing so. Simply ask for two to three small components that can be altered, tweaked, or refreshed (I suggest NOT using the word changed) A couple years of these small, not changes, let's say "Advances" will give your event a whole fresh look and slowly guide them without the scare of sudden change. This has proven so true in our children's ministry where tradition is so heavily valued.

Take it, try it, trust me....it works! I would love to hear if it's used this week!
In his book, Seth Godin asks "When was the last time you did something for the first time?" I love that! And I believe that question, paired with faith can help make a fierce leader.
Blessings for your week!
